Travis County Jail Inmate Search | Current Custody

Travis County, Texas · Current jail custody, booking ID, bond, housing and release

Check Current Travis County Jail Custody Before You Call, Visit or Pay

If someone was arrested in Austin or elsewhere in Travis County, start with the Sheriff’s current inmate search. Once you locate the person, save the exact booked name, date of birth, Jail ID or booking number, current housing location and every charge with its bond information.

That first search prevents several common mistakes: driving to the wrong jail, mailing a letter to the wrong facility, depositing money under the wrong booking number, or assuming one bond amount will release someone who has another charge. This page follows what a family member usually needs next—not a generic arrest-record checklist.

Custody does not mean conviction. An inmate search shows that a person is or was in the Sheriff’s custody and may display charges and bond information. It does not establish guilt or show how the criminal case will eventually end.

Need to know whether the person is in jail right now?

Run the official TCSO inmate search first. If a recent arrest is not visible, do not start sending money or driving to a facility based on a third-party website.

Start with the question you actually have

Four different answers can come from one inmate record

CURRENT CUSTODY Is the person still in jail?

Use TCSO first. Verify the booked name, DOB, Jail ID or booking number and current facility.

RELEASE Can the person bond out?

Read the bond line under every charge. One charge may have a bond while another still blocks release.

FAMILY SUPPORT Can I visit, call, mail or send money?

The current housing location and booking number determine the next step.

COURT CASE What happens after booking?

Use the District Clerk for felonies and County Clerk for Class A/B misdemeanors.

What happens before a current-custody record becomes useful

TCSO states that people arrested in Travis County are brought to the Central Booking Facility inside the Travis County Jail at 500 W. 10th Street in Austin.
Arrival at Central Booking

The arrested person enters the intake process at 500 W. 10th Street.

Identification and intake

The person is processed into TCSO custody and assigned jail identifiers used later for services and records.

Medical and mental-health screening

TCSO screens people entering custody for health and behavioral-health needs.

Pretrial interview

Travis County Pretrial Services interviews defendants in custody and may make a personal-bond recommendation to the court.

First appearance / magistration

A magistrate addresses rights, bond amounts and conditions, and may consider personal-bond release.

Release or housing assignment

The person may be released or remain in custody and be housed according to TCSO classification and operational needs.

Upon release, TCSO says the individual receives paperwork with a court date. Court-setting information can also be found through the Travis County criminal docket tools or obtained through the person’s attorney.
No result?

Why a recent Travis County arrest may not appear

The person may still be processing A fresh arrest can still be moving through Central Booking.
The booked name may differ Try the middle name, suffix, maiden name, hyphenated surname or another known spelling.
The person may already be released A short jail stay can end before a family member searches.
The arrest may be in another county Where the person lives is not necessarily where they were booked.
The incident may involve a citation Not every criminal allegation results in continued jail custody.
The person may have entered another custody system State-prison or federal custody uses different search systems.
What to say when calling jail information
I am trying to confirm whether [full legal name], date of birth [date], is currently in Travis County Sheriff custody. The arrest may have occurred around [date/time] through [agency]. I do not have a current inmate result. Can you tell me whether the person is still processing, housed, released, or whether I should search another custody system?
Two correctional locations

Do not confuse Central Booking with the Del Valle jail campus

Travis County Jail / Central Booking

This is the downtown Central Booking location where TCSO says people arrested in Travis County are initially brought.

TCCC is the county’s campus-style correctional complex and is also the location for onsite family visitation.

General Jail Information: 512-854-9889

TCSO’s Corrections Bureau operates both sites. The downtown complex includes Travis County Jail and Central Booking, while TCCC in Del Valle contains multiple inmate housing and support buildings.
Check the inmate record immediately before mailing or visiting. Do not use the original booking location as proof that the person remains there.

Personal bond is different

Travis County Pretrial Services interviews defendants and makes recommendations regarding personal-bond release. The judge—not the family member and not Pretrial Services—decides whether a personal bond is granted.

Pretrial Services

Paperback books, magazines and newspapers may be received only when sent directly from the publisher or distributing warehouse. TCSO limits an inmate to possession of two books and two magazines at a time.

TCSO’s contraband list prohibits items such as postage stamps, blank envelopes, adhesive labels, stickers, tape, writing instruments, hardback books, spiral-bound books, Polaroid photographs, food, medication and many other non-paper items.

Attorney calls are handled differently. TCSO provides a free local attorney call of up to 20 minutes. Registered attorney calls are not recorded. Attorneys needing the client to call them may leave a message with visitation staff at 512-854-4666 and should have the booking number, full name and DOB ready.
Ordinary family calls and tablet communications should not be treated as confidential attorney-client communication.

Property and money release

An inmate can authorize someone to pick up stored property

TCSO inventories belongings at booking. Valuables such as keys, ID, wallet and jewelry are placed into a sealed valuable bag, while release clothing is stored separately.

Property is generally all-or-nothing. The designee cannot normally select one item from the sealed valuable bag. The inmate must sign the property-release form before property or money can be released.

After the custody search

Use different clerks for felony and misdemeanor cases

Felony case

The Travis County District Clerk maintains adult felony criminal records.

Public users may review the Register of Actions using a cause number or party name. The District Clerk’s online portal includes public criminal cases from 2008 to the present; older records may require a records request.

Criminal Records: 512-854-9420

Class A / B misdemeanor

The Travis County Clerk maintains misdemeanor records.

The Clerk currently provides misdemeanor case data from January 1981 to the present. Online case data updates every 24 hours, while newly filed document images can take about 72 hours to appear.

Misdemeanor Division: 512-854-9188

Need only the next court date?

Travis County’s criminal docket search can be searched by the arrested person’s name, attorney, judge or court number, or case number.

A jail charge is not the final disposition. Follow the matching court case for prosecutor filing, hearings, dismissals, pleas, deferred adjudication, judgments and sentencing.

Need a disposition of arrest?

Felony disposition

TCSO directs felony disposition requests to the Travis County District Clerk.

Misdemeanor disposition

TCSO directs misdemeanor disposition requests to the Travis County Clerk.

Expunction

Travis County District Clerk handles all expunction filings, including misdemeanor and felony expunctions.

Nondisclosure

The filing route depends on the type of case. The District Clerk handles felony nondisclosures, while Travis County Clerk provides guidance for qualifying misdemeanor nondisclosures.

Do not begin with the jail record alone. Obtain the criminal case disposition first because eligibility can depend on exactly how the charge ended.

10 title-specific questions

Travis County Jail inmate-search questions answered

How do I search for someone currently in Travis County Jail?

Use the official Travis County Sheriff’s Office Find an Inmate page and search for the person by name. Open the matching custody record and verify the full name and date of birth before using the Jail ID or booking number, charges, bond information or housing details. If the person cannot be found but the arrest was recent, call Travis County jail information at 512-854-9889.

What information should I save from a Travis County inmate search?

Save the inmate’s exact booked name, date of birth, Jail ID or booking number, current housing location, booking information, each listed charge and the bond information under each charge. The Jail ID or booking number is especially useful for mail, visitation, trust-fund deposits, property questions and calls to jail staff.

Where are Travis County inmates housed?

Travis County operates the Travis County Jail and Central Booking Facility at 500 West 10th Street in Austin and the Travis County Correctional Complex at 3614 Bill Price Road in Del Valle. A newly arrested person is brought to Central Booking, but housing can later change, so check the current inmate record before visiting or mailing anything.

Why is someone recently arrested in Travis County not showing in the inmate search?

The person may still be going through Central Booking, the name may be entered differently, the person may already have been released, the arrest may have occurred in another county, or the event may have resulted in a citation rather than continued jail custody. Try the person’s full and alternate names and call jail information at 512-854-9889 when a recent arrest cannot be confirmed online.

How do I find bond information for a Travis County inmate?

Open the inmate’s official TCSO custody record because bond information appears under each charge. “Any type of bond” means cash, surety or personal bond may be permitted. “Cash or surety” means a personal bond is not accepted for that charge. “No bond information available” means a bond has not yet been set for that charge and may be set later.

How do I visit an inmate in Travis County Jail?

TCSO currently conducts face-to-face and onsite video visitation at the Travis County Correctional Complex, 3614 Bill Price Road in Del Valle, Wednesday through Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., excluding county holidays. Face-to-face visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. Arrive at least 30 minutes early because check-in closes 15 minutes before the visit.

How do I send mail to a Travis County inmate?

Send letters and cards directly to the facility where the inmate is currently housed. TCSO requires the inmate’s full name, date of birth and Jail ID or booking number, and the mail must include the sender’s return address. Check the inmate search again before mailing because Travis County Jail and the Correctional Complex use different street addresses.

How do I put money on a Travis County inmate account?

TCSO accepts Inmate Trust Fund deposits in person at the Travis County Correctional Complex Finance Building, by mail to the Inmate Trust Fund in Del Valle, and through Western Union. The inmate’s full name, date of birth and Jail ID or booking number are required. For Western Union, TCSO instructs users to combine the seven-digit booking number with the inmate’s last name and use code city TCSOITF TX.

How do I find the Travis County criminal case after locating an inmate?

Use the Travis County District Clerk for felony cases and the Travis County Clerk for Class A and Class B misdemeanor cases. Travis County also provides a criminal docket search for upcoming settings. Compare the defendant’s name, cause number and case details because a jail charge is not the same thing as a final court disposition.

How can I obtain an old Travis County incarceration record?

TCSO incarceration records are available from May 1988 to the present. The Sheriff’s Office currently charges $15 for an incarceration record and requires current identification. A request for another person’s incarceration record requires a notarized authorization signed by that person or a power of attorney together with a copy of the person’s identification.
