See What Happens After a Travis County Arrest Reaches Central Booking

If someone was just arrested in Austin or elsewhere in Travis County, start with the Sheriff’s current-inmate search. New arrests are taken through Central Booking at 500 W. 10th Street, where intake can include health screening, fingerprints, a booking photo, property inventory, assignment of a booking number and magistration.

One important detail saves a lot of confusion: the Sheriff’s public search is mainly for people currently in custody. If the person was released quickly, you may need the criminal court search or the separate APD booking database instead. This page shows which route to use and what to do after you find the booking.

BOOKING RECORD CREATED
A jail booking records an arrest and detention event—not a conviction. Charges can change after prosecutor review, and the person may later receive a dismissal, acquittal, deferred adjudication, conviction or another outcome. Use court records before describing an arrest as a final criminal result.

Important search difference

“Recent booking” can mean three different things in Travis County

JUST ARRESTED Use TCSO current inmate search

This is the fastest route when the person may still be processing or in custody. Save the Jail ID or booking number as soon as it appears.

Follow the current-custody search
RELEASED ALREADY Move to the criminal case

A released person may no longer be useful to search through a current-inmate tool. Use the felony or misdemeanor court record to continue the timeline.

Find the case after release
BOOKING PHOTO / PRIOR INTAKE Use the APD booking database carefully

APD’s database allows searches by name, DOB, booking number, booking date and charge, but eligible photos are posted 13 days after arrest.

Understand the 13-day delay
What we did not find: TCSO does not present its current public tool as a simple “today’s bookings” or daily chronological feed. For a brand-new arrest, search the individual rather than waiting for a generic recent-booking list.

Jump directly to what your family needs

Use the first few sections for a new arrest. The later sections cover records, court follow-up and inmate services.

Official Central Booking flow

What happens between the arrest and the first public jail record?

TCSO publishes a booking-flow diagram that explains why a new arrest may not immediately look like a completed inmate record. Every arrest is routed through Central Booking, but medical needs, fingerprinting, magistration and housing decisions occur during intake.

01
Arrival and screening

The person completes an intake questionnaire covering medical, mental and physical health history.

02
Medical decision

TCSO determines whether medical evaluation is needed and establishes housing, dietary or other restrictions when necessary.

03
Holding

The official flow shows a free phone call, booking photograph, fingerprints and magistration while the person is in holding.

04
Magistration

A judge advises the person of the formal charge or charges and determines whether bail applies.

05
Property and housing

Personal property is inventoried, a booking number is issued, jail clothing is provided and the person may await transport to TCCC.

If the arrested person arrived with injuries: TCSO’s booking flow states that the arresting agency takes the person to a hospital for evaluation and remains with them until medically released.
Medication: Do not drive medication to the jail on your own. TCSO Medical says not to bring medication unless jail medical staff specifically contacts the family and requests it.

Before you assume the person was never booked

Still in Central Booking

Intake screening, medical review, prints, photograph and magistration happen before the booking process is fully settled.

Name does not match

Try the complete legal surname, suffix, maiden name or another spelling that may appear on identification.

Already released

Move to the criminal court search when the person was booked and released before you checked the current-inmate tool.

Field release or citation

Not every criminal accusation results in extended county-jail custody. A court case may exist without a long jail stay.

Booked elsewhere

Confirm whether the person was actually booked in Travis County rather than Williamson, Hays, Bastrop or another jurisdiction.

Medical treatment first

An injured arrestee can be taken for hospital evaluation before normal Central Booking processing continues.

Preserve the receipt for any later cash-bond refund
Cash bonds may be handled at the facility where the defendant is housed, including the Bonding Office associated with the Blackwell-Thurman Criminal Justice Center or the Travis County Correctional Complex. TCSO advises calling 512-854-4180 first to obtain the correct location.

Personal bond

A defendant cannot simply approve a personal bond for themselves. Travis County Pretrial Services or an attorney may submit a request, and a judge decides whether to grant it.

Pretrial investigation

Pretrial officers interview defendants in custody, verify information and make recommendations to the court concerning personal bond and release conditions.

Personal bond status: 512-854-9381

Current processing fees

  • Bond below $1,334: $20
  • Bond $1,334 or above: $40
  • Ignition-interlock condition: 3% of bond, maximum $300
  • IID monitoring: additional $10 per month

Fees are due after release; do not send payment in advance.

First appearance has defense counsel

Travis County’s Counsel at First Appearance program provides defense representation during magistration for qualifying arrest matters. The judge reads rights, considers bail and release conditions, and can hear arguments from defense counsel and prosecutors.
Travis County’s Office of First Defense says magistration hearings are conducted every day, including nights, weekends and holidays, at the Blackwell-Thurman Justice Center. Families should not pay anyone claiming to be an appointed attorney in exchange for release.
After booking

Follow the jail intake into the correct criminal court

Local shortcut: A Travis County cause number beginning D-1-DC is a felony case. A cause number beginning with C is a misdemeanor case.
FELONY District Clerk

Adult felony criminal records, felony warrants, felony nondisclosures and all expunction filings.

CLASS A / B MISDEMEANOR County Clerk

The County Clerk maintains Travis County misdemeanor records for the County Criminal Courts at Law.

NEXT COURT SETTING Criminal Docket Search

Search future felony and misdemeanor settings by arrested person, attorney, judge, court or case number.

FINAL RESULT Read the disposition

Look for the actual dismissal, plea, judgment, acquittal or other final action for each count.

Copy the cause number from the jail or paperwork A cause number is more precise than searching a common name.
Choose felony or misdemeanor records Do not contact the District Clerk for an ordinary Class A or B misdemeanor record that belongs with the County Clerk.
Open the Odyssey record Compare the defendant’s name, filing date and cause number with the booking.
Find the attorney of record The court result can identify who currently represents the defendant.
Check the current docket Court settings can change. Use the criminal docket search rather than relying on old release paperwork alone.
Read each charge separately Different counts in the same arrest can have different outcomes.
County Clerk misdemeanor case data is updated every 24 hours. The Clerk advises that newly filed document images can take about 72 hours to appear online, so a case entry may exist before every document image is visible.

Older records

Older felony case

The District Clerk’s free online court-record coverage page lists criminal records from 2008 forward. Older records may require a paid records request, and the criminal-history page notes that older felony material may be archived.

Older misdemeanor case

Travis County Clerk lists misdemeanor case data from January 1981 to the present. A pre-1981 misdemeanor name search currently carries a separate archive-search fee.

Going to Blackwell-Thurman?

Criminal Courts Administration is at the Blackwell-Thurman Criminal Justice Center, 509 W. 11th Street, Austin. Travis County advises courthouse visitors to allow extra time for security screening. If Austin Police made the arrest

Do not request an APD incident narrative from TCSO simply because the person was booked into the Travis County Jail. Austin Police maintains its own reports and public-information system.

APD’s public incident-report database is updated daily and currently provides report data from the present date back 18 months. A known case number is one of the available search methods.

Travis County-specific mistakes

Six ways people waste time after a new booking

Looking for a “today’s bookings” page

Search the person directly through TCSO rather than assuming there is a simple public chronological intake feed.

Using the APD photo database too soon

APD states that eligible booking photos are posted 13 days after arrest, so it is not the right tool for an arrest from this morning.

Driving downtown for visitation

Onsite public visits are administered at TCCC in Del Valle.

Calling the wrong Clerk

District Clerk handles felony cases. County Clerk handles most misdemeanor criminal records.

Sending mail without a booking number

TCSO requires the inmate’s identifying information and a sender return address.

Paying one bond without checking the rest

Multiple charges can carry different release conditions. Confirm the full booking before paying.

10 recent-booking questions

Travis County jail booking questions answered

How do I find a recent Travis County jail booking?

Use the Travis County Sheriff’s Office Find an Inmate service first when the person may still be in custody. Travis County’s public jail search is primarily a current-custody tool rather than a day-by-day historical booking feed. Verify the person’s name, date of birth, Jail ID or booking number, charges and bond information. If the person was already released, continue with Travis County court records or the APD Booking Photo Database when applicable.

Where are people taken after an arrest in Travis County?

The Travis County Sheriff’s Office states that people arrested in Travis County are brought to the Central Booking Facility inside the Travis County Jail at 500 West 10th Street in Austin. Intake can include health screening, property inventory, fingerprints, booking photograph, assignment of a booking number, magistration and a bond decision before housing or transfer.

Why is a newly arrested person not showing in the Travis County inmate search?

The person may still be moving through Central Booking, medical screening, fingerprinting, magistration or data entry. The booked name may also differ from the name you searched, or the person may have been released. Try the correct legal name and call Travis County jail information at 512-854-9889 if current custody remains unclear.

Can I search old Travis County bookings after someone has been released?

The Sheriff’s public inmate search is intended for current custody. For a released person, search the Travis County criminal court systems for the resulting case. TCSO incarceration records are available from May 1988 to the present, but TCSO requires identification and, when requesting another person’s incarceration record, notarized authorization or power of attorney. The current TCSO incarceration-record fee is $15.

When do Travis County booking photos appear online?

The Austin Police Department Booking Photo Database states that eligible arrestee photographs are posted 13 days after the arrest. The database also contains booking photographs from other police agencies that use Travis County Central Booking. Juvenile photographs are confidential, and some photographs may be withheld when publication would interfere with law-enforcement interests.

How do I check bond after a Travis County booking?

Open the TCSO inmate result and review the bond information under every charge. ANY type of bond means cash, surety or personal bond may be possible. Cash or surety means a personal bond is not available for that charge. No bond information available means a bond has not yet been set. Call jail information at 512-854-4180 before traveling to post a cash bond.

Where do I search the court case after a Travis County jail booking?

Felony cases are maintained by the Travis County District Clerk and misdemeanor cases by the Travis County Clerk. Travis County criminal cause numbers beginning D-1-DC identify felony cases, while cause numbers beginning with C identify misdemeanor cases. Use the Odyssey case portal and Criminal Docket Search to verify the filed charge, attorney, court setting and disposition.

How do I visit someone booked into Travis County Jail?

Public onsite visitation is administered at the Travis County Correctional Complex at 3614 Bill Price Road in Del Valle. Current TCSO rules allow two visits per week, with visitation Wednesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., excluding county holidays. Face-to-face visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours ahead, and visitors should arrive at least 30 minutes early.

How do I send money or mail to a Travis County inmate?

For mail, first confirm whether the person is housed at Travis County Jail, 500 West 10th Street, or the Travis County Correctional Complex, 3614 Bill Price Road. Correspondence must include the inmate’s full name, date of birth and Jail ID or booking number plus the sender’s return address. Inmate Trust Fund deposits may be made using approved in-person, mail or Western Union methods listed by TCSO.

How can I get an official Travis County incarceration or arrest record?

TCSO incarceration records are available from May 1988 to the present and currently cost $15. For a Sheriff’s incident report, TCSO lists public-information copies at $0.10 per page, while a written open-records request can be used to request additional releasable material. A booking photograph requested by a member of the general public must also be requested through TCSO Open Records.
