Find the Right Hidalgo County Criminal Case Before You Read the History
Hidalgo County does not put every criminal record in the hands of one clerk. County Courts at Law handle local misdemeanor cases through the County Clerk, while felony cases in district court are maintained by the District Clerk. Fine-only Justice Court or municipal cases can sit outside both of those searches.
Start with the county’s Records Inquiry portal and choose Criminal Case Records. Once you find a possible case, verify the defendant, court, filing date and cause number before reading charges or disposition. If the person may still be jailed, the same county system also provides separate Jail Records and Jail Bond Records searches.

Try the full legal surname, former name, maiden name, suffix or other known variation.
Jail or arrest information can exist before a complete criminal court case is visible.
The arrest or court filing may be in Cameron, Starr, Willacy or another jurisdiction rather than Hidalgo County.

Some disposed District Clerk cases have not yet been electronically imaged and may need retrieval from storage.
Search Jail Records first and save any case identifiers that can lead you to the court cause.

Hidalgo County background check versus a case search
County Clerk misdemeanor background check
The County Clerk Criminal Department specifically states that it provides criminal background checks for misdemeanor crimes committed in Hidalgo County.
Use this when your question is about the County Clerk’s misdemeanor record rather than statewide Texas history.
Call 956-318-2100 before visiting to confirm the current request method, identification requirements and fee.
Individual case lookup
Use the public case portal when you already know or suspect a particular criminal cause and want its court history.
A single case search is not automatically a complete background check because another misdemeanor, felony, JP, municipal, other-county or statewide record may exist.

Five ways to avoid searching the wrong Hidalgo County record
“County Court at Law” points you toward the County Clerk. A district court points you toward the District Clerk.
It reduces same-name confusion and makes telephone or copy requests much easier.
Jail Records answers custody questions. Criminal Case Records answers prosecution and disposition questions.
A fine-only citation can exist without appearing where you expected a County Court-at-Law criminal case.
District Clerk records in storage may require retrieval and more than 24 hours.
DPS itself warns that a name-based statewide result is not positive identification.
Criminal records, history and case-search questions answered
How do I search Hidalgo County criminal records online?
Open the official Hidalgo County Records Inquiry portal and choose Criminal Case Records. Search the available fields using the most precise information you have, preferably the cause or case number. If you search by name, verify the defendant, court, filing date, charges and case history before relying on a match.
Who keeps misdemeanor criminal records in Hidalgo County?
The Hidalgo County Clerk Criminal Department maintains misdemeanor cases filed in the County Courts at Law. The county states that this department serves County Courts at Law 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 and provides misdemeanor criminal background checks and case documentation.
Who keeps felony criminal records in Hidalgo County?
Felony criminal cases are handled in the district courts, and the Hidalgo County District Clerk is the appropriate custodian for district-court criminal case records. The District Clerk is located at 100 N. Closner in Edinburg and can be reached at 956-318-2200.
Does Hidalgo County have one search for court and jail records?
The Hidalgo County Records Inquiry portal provides separate areas for Criminal Case Records, Civil Family and Probate Case Records, Court Calendar, Jail Records and Jail Bond Records. Choose the section that matches the question you are trying to answer.
How can I find the final disposition of a Hidalgo County criminal case?
Search the criminal case in the Hidalgo County Records Inquiry portal and review the docket and disposition-related entries. For formal proof, request an official or certified copy from the County Clerk for a County Court-at-Law misdemeanor or from the District Clerk for a district-court felony.
Can the Hidalgo County District Clerk search for a case if I do not know the case number?
Yes. The District Clerk’s official FAQ says staff can conduct a case search when the case number is unknown. The office requires the person’s full name and date of birth and currently lists a $5 search fee. You can also search the public portal yourself.
How much are electronic copies from the Hidalgo County District Clerk?
The District Clerk currently lists a $1 charge for an electronic document up to 10 pages and $0.10 for each page or part of a page over 10 pages. Certified copies are mailed or placed in will call rather than emailed. Confirm current charges before ordering.
Where do I request Hidalgo County jail bookings or Sheriff’s case reports?
The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is the custodian identified by the county for mugshots, jail bookings, case reports, 911 calls, dashcam video and incident reports. The Sheriff’s Office is located at 711 E. Cibolo Road in Edinburg and can be reached at 956-383-8114.
How do I search criminal history across Texas instead of only Hidalgo County?
Use the Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal History Name Search for a broader Texas search. DPS currently charges one $1 search credit for an online search and warns that name-based results are not positive identity matches. Fingerprints are the reliable way to positively link a person to a criminal record.
Can a Hidalgo County criminal record be expunged or made nonpublic?
Some Texas cases may qualify for expunction or an order of nondisclosure, but eligibility depends on the arrest, charge, disposition, waiting period and criminal history. Obtain the complete disposition first and use current Texas court forms or qualified legal advice before filing.
