Follow a Harris County Criminal Case From Filing to Final Disposition

Use the Harris County District Clerk when you need the history of a felony or Class A or B misdemeanor case—not just the original arrest. The most accurate search begins with the cause number. When that is unavailable, use the defendant’s name, date range, court type, case status or offense type.

Once the correct cause opens, read the docket in date order and locate the document that actually resolves each count. This guide also explains background checks, certified disposition letters, copy fees, old cases, JP and municipal records, missing documents, warrants, corrections, expunctions and nondisclosure orders.

A criminal case search is not the same as an arrest search. The District Clerk records filed court causes. An arrest may exist without a filed public case, and a booking allegation may differ from the charge ultimately prosecuted.

Which Harris County court system has the case?

DISTRICT CLERK Felonies and Class A or B misdemeanors

Search public causes, case details, parties, documents, costs, court location, docket settings and dispositions.

Use this portal for most Harris County criminal-history searches.
JUSTICE COURTS County JP citations and Class C matters

Search by the JP case number, driver’s licence number, or name and date of birth.

District Clerk background searches exclude Justice of the Peace cases.
HOUSTON MUNICIPAL City citations, ordinance cases and municipal warrants

Use Houston Municipal Courts for City of Houston cases rather than the District Clerk.

A Houston ticket may never appear in the county criminal search.
TEXAS DPS Broader Texas criminal-history search

Use the state system when the search must extend beyond Harris County.

A name-based state result is not the same as fingerprint-confirmed identity.
Fast decision: District felony or Class A/B misdemeanor → District Clerk. County JP citation → Harris County Justice Courts. City of Houston citation → Houston Municipal Courts. Statewide history → Texas DPS.

Search the complete cause number first A cause-number search is more precise than a broad name search and reduces same-name mistakes.
Use Party Inquiry when the cause is unknown Enter the name in the format requested by the portal, then narrow with a filed-date range, case status, court type or offense type.
Open every plausible result Compare the defendant name, date of birth, SPN, filing date, assigned court and cause number.
Review the case-details page Look for parties, charges, costs, documents, docket events and the file’s current location.
Read events in chronological order Start with filing and charging entries, then follow settings, motions, pleas, orders, judgment and sentence.
Check every count separately One count may be dismissed while another ends in deferred adjudication, conviction or another result.
Save the controlling document Keep the cause number and obtain the dismissal, judgment, sentence or other final order when proof is needed.

Read the case as a sequence, not a single status

Arrest, citation or referral The event may begin with a custodial arrest, cite-and-release process, summons or law-enforcement referral.
Prosecutor review The filed court charge may differ from the allegation recorded by the arresting agency.
Case filing The District Clerk assigns or records the cause and the case appears in the appropriate court system.
Charging document A felony may proceed through an indictment. A misdemeanor may proceed through an information or complaint.
Settings and motions The docket can show arraignment, pretrial settings, motions, resets, discovery activity and bond-related orders.
Plea, trial or dismissal The cause may end by dismissal, plea, deferred adjudication, trial verdict or another court action.
Judgment and sentence When applicable, review the signed judgment and sentence rather than relying on a short docket label.
Post-judgment activity Appeals, motions to revoke or adjudicate, writs, amended judgments and collection entries may appear later.
Human review rule: Read the docket from filing through the most recent entry. A case that appeared finished years ago may contain later appeal, supervision or post-conviction activity.

Court dates and settings

Search current and past Harris County criminal dockets

The District Clerk docket search accepts a start and end date, cause number, docket type, SPN, bondsman licence number, court type, court, case/offense type and sort option.
Open the District Clerk records page Sign in and move to the Dockets section.
Enter a date range for past settings When no date range is provided, the portal begins with current or upcoming information.
Use the cause number or SPN This is safer than scanning an entire court docket for a common name.
Select court type before the individual court The court and offense options can change based on the selected court type.
Complete the verification check The public portal prevents automated searching and requires human verification.
Recheck the full case before travelling A docket list can change after a reset, cancellation, transfer or new order.
A court date is not a disposition. A setting may be reset, cancelled or used for a limited issue. Read what happened after the date.

Do not confront or attempt to detain anyone. Verify a warrant through the issuing court or law-enforcement agency. Old docket entries and same-name results can be misleading.
Incorrect names, charges or outcomes

Correct the office that owns the inaccurate entry

Identify the exact error Record the cause number, page, date viewed and incorrect field.
Compare the controlling document Obtain the signed judgment, dismissal, amended order or other court paper.
Determine who created the information A District Clerk docket, police report, Sheriff booking record and DPS history are maintained by different offices.
Submit a focused correction request Identify the exact incorrect value and attach the document proving the correction.
Recheck linked databases A corrected court record may not immediately update DPS or a private background-reporting company.
Dispute private reports separately Provide the consumer-reporting company with the certified disposition and precise disputed item.
Correction is not record clearing. Correction fixes inaccurate data. Expunction or nondisclosure addresses an accurate record that may qualify for legal restriction.
Expunction and nondisclosure

Get the complete history before trying to clear the record

Texas expunction

An eligible expunction can require covered arrest and case records to be removed or destroyed. Eligibility is narrower than many people expect.

  • Obtain the arrest and cause numbers.
  • Get the certified disposition for every related count.
  • Check whether other charges arose from the same arrest.
  • Use current Texas forms and eligibility guidance.
Review current expunction guidance

Order of nondisclosure

An eligible nondisclosure order restricts public disclosure but does not erase the record from every government or authorised-agency system.

  • Confirm the precise disposition.
  • Review the correct nondisclosure statute and waiting period.
  • Check exclusions tied to the offense and prior history.
  • Use the Harris County-specific clearing tool when appropriate.

Local search mistakes

Harris County details that prevent a wrong result

Do not search only the arrest date

The criminal cause may be filed days or weeks after the arrest or referral.

Do not stop at “closed”

Open the actual judgment, dismissal or final disposition for each count.

Do not expect tickets in District Clerk results

Search Justice Courts or Houston Municipal Courts for Class C and traffic matters.

Do not buy an entire file automatically

A single certified judgment or disposition letter may solve the problem for less cost.

Do not treat a name as identity

Match the date of birth, SPN, cause number, court and filing date.

Do not call an arrest a conviction

The court history—not the original booking label—shows the legal outcome.

10 title-specific answers

Harris County criminal-record questions answered

How do I search Harris County criminal records online?

Open the Harris County District Clerk Search Our Records and Documents portal, create or use a registered login, and select the Criminal search. Search by the exact case or cause number when known. Otherwise, use the defendant’s name, filed-date range, case status, court type or offense type. Open each possible match and compare the defendant name, date of birth, SPN, filing date, court and cause number.

Is the Harris County criminal-record search free?

Public Harris County case information can be viewed without a research charge after the user creates or uses a registered District Clerk login. Charges may apply when ordering paper copies, electronic documents, certification, a primary information search or other requested records.

What criminal cases are included in the Harris County District Clerk search?

The District Clerk search covers public Harris County criminal causes handled by the criminal district courts and county criminal courts at law. Criminal district courts hear felony cases. County criminal courts at law hear Class A and Class B misdemeanors and certain appeals from municipal and Justice of the Peace courts.

Why can I not find a traffic ticket or Class C misdemeanor in the District Clerk search?

The District Clerk states that its background and criminal search does not include Justice of the Peace cases or municipal Class C misdemeanors. Search the Harris County Justice Courts for county JP cases and the Houston Municipal Courts system for City of Houston citations, ordinance cases and municipal warrants.

How do I find the final disposition of a Harris County criminal case?

Open the matching District Clerk cause and review the docket, documents and case details in date order. Look for the judgment, dismissal order, plea, deferred-adjudication order, acquittal, sentence or other final document for every count. A case marked closed or disposed should not be treated as a complete answer without reading the actual disposition.

How much do Harris County criminal court copies cost?

The District Clerk currently lists paper printed copies at one dollar per page, electronic copies of one to ten pages at one dollar total, electronic copies of eleven pages or more at ten cents per page, paper converted to electronic at one dollar per page, and certification and seal at five dollars per document. A primary information search adds five dollars when required identifying information is unavailable.

Can I request a Harris County criminal background check or no-records letter?

Yes. The District Clerk offers Harris County criminal background searches and certificates or letters of disposition, including no-records letters when appropriate. Search with the first name, last name and date of birth, review returned cases, and use the Add to Basket option when available. Criminal Customer Service and the Records Center also assist with these requests.

How do I search an old Harris County criminal case?

Use the Historical Records area in the District Clerk search and select Criminal. The office focuses preservation work on records dating from 1837 through 1951 and continues digitizing historical material. A case number, case style and date range make the search easier. A primary information search may be required when those details are missing.

Why is a document missing from a Harris County criminal case?

The document may be confidential, sealed, expunged, restricted by law, unavailable as a public image, stored in a paper file, recently filed but not yet imaged, or maintained by another court or agency. Check the case-file location field and contact Criminal Customer Service or the Records Center for the specific document.

Can a Harris County criminal record be expunged or sealed?

Some records may qualify for a Texas expunction, while others may qualify for an order of nondisclosure. Eligibility depends on the arrest, charge, disposition, waiting period, prior history, probation, deferred adjudication and related cases. Obtain the complete case history and certified disposition before using current Texas forms or seeking legal advice.
