Criminal history pages can look confusing because one case may accumulate dozens of docket events. You usually do not need to understand every filing. Follow the events that change the legal status of the case.

Arrest and magistration The person is brought before a magistrate. Probable cause, rights, bail and possible appointed counsel are addressed.
Pre-file period A recent case may exist only under a MAG number before a prosecutor files a misdemeanor information or a felony reaches indictment.
Formal filing A filed misdemeanor receives a County Court at Law case number. A felony indictment becomes a District Court case.
Court assignment and attorney The record begins showing the assigned judge, settings, counsel and court orders.
Arraignment / plea stage The defendant may enter a plea or waive arraignment according to the applicable procedure.
Pretrial activity Motions, continuances, discovery-related events, bond orders and additional settings can appear.
Resolution The case may be dismissed, resolved by plea, tried to a judge or jury, or otherwise disposed.
Judgment and sentence When applicable, locate the judgment, punishment, community-supervision order or other final order.
Later enforcement Motions to revoke, adjudicate or modify conditions can create new docket activity after the original disposition.
A case marked “closed” is not enough. Find the actual event that closed it. “Dismissed,” “acquitted,” “convicted,” “deferred adjudication” and “completed sentence” have different meanings.

Warrant / capias A court may have ordered the person’s arrest or appearance. Newest docket entry and court or Sheriff’s Office before acting.

A new arrest may be in “pre-file” status

This is one of the easiest Comal County searches to misunderstand. A person can be arrested and magistrated before a prosecutor has filed the criminal case in the court that will ultimately hear it.

Step 1: Jail record

Confirm the arrest, current custody information and available bond information through the county’s Jail Records area.

Step 2: MAG number

Every defendant magistrated in Comal County is assigned a pre-file Magistrate case number, commonly referred to as the MAG number.

Local courthouse tip: the Magistrate Court says its daily docket is posted in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Bonding Department. Public magistration hearings generally begin at 9:30 a.m. daily, although the docket can change.

Do not publish or act on a name match alone. Common names, name changes and similar dates can produce the wrong person. Use at least two independent identifiers, and use fingerprint-based information when the consequence of an identity mistake is serious.

The District Clerk says free public parking is available at the corner of Seguin and Bridge Streets. The courthouse parking garage is reserved for handicapped drivers and employees. Parking around the courthouse itself is not generally free, and the City of New Braunfels enforces parking.
