What to check before assuming the person is not in jail

The arrest is extremely recent The person may still be going through identification, screening, booking paperwork or magistrate processing.

What happens next

From booking to magistrate, bond and release

Booking and screening Detention staff process identification, arrest paperwork and intake. The facility’s current job description also identifies medical, mental-health and suicide screening as part of intake work.
Initial phone access The current inmate handbook states that an inmate receives two completed phone calls immediately after booking and no later than four hours after arrival.
Initial Appearance A magistrate reviews the arrest and release conditions. The Sheriff says magistrates conduct Initial Appearance at least twice daily, sometimes more often.
Bond information posts Once bond is set, the Sheriff’s FAQ says the amount is updated on the online jail roster.
Bond or continued detention The person may post an eligible bond, remain because bond has not been posted, or stay in custody because of another legal restriction.
Release or transfer After all applicable requirements are cleared, release processing occurs. A sentenced inmate may later move to TDCJ or another authority.
Initial Appearance can be watched online when the county is streaming it. The Sheriff publishes a live-stream route for hearings conducted at the Detention Center. The stream is not archived, and the Sheriff’s page specifically prohibits recording the hearing.

Do not pay until every active case has been checked

The Sheriff’s Office states that inmates can typically bond once they have seen a magistrate. An eligible bond can be posted in full at the Lubbock County Detention Center bond window, or a local surety company can post the bond subject to its own fees and requirements.

Schedule at least 24 hours ahead Visits must be scheduled one day in advance.

What ID is accepted?

Visitors over age 17 must bring an acceptable government-issued identification document. Examples listed by the Sheriff include a state ID or driver’s license, military ID, official passport, bar card and qualifying law-enforcement photo identification.

Bring a solid quarter. The Sheriff says visitor lockers require a quarter, which is returned when the key is returned. The Sheriff’s published visitor instructions do not promise a particular parking arrangement, so allow extra time and follow the posted visitor-lobby and parking signs when you arrive.
Clothing can cause a visit to be denied. The Sheriff specifically prohibits items such as tank or halter tops, see-through clothing, exposed midriffs, overly revealing clothing, certain short skirts or shorts and clothing that signifies gang affiliation.

What happens right after booking? The current LCDC inmate handbook states that inmates receive two completed telephone calls immediately after booking, but no later than four hours after arrival.
Assume ordinary jail communications can be recorded. LCDC states that non-privileged inmate calls and public video visits may be recorded for security or investigative purposes. Do not discuss evidence, witness strategy, passwords or confidential legal planning on an ordinary call or visit.

  5. Ordinary valuable-property release is generally all-or-nothing.
Clothes for a court appearance

The current inmate handbook says personal court clothing must be coordinated through the attorney of record.

  • No jewelry.
  • Approved clothing is accepted no earlier than 24 hours before court.
  • The attorney must arrange pickup after the trial.
  • Unclaimed items can eventually be donated.
Outside parties generally cannot deliver ordinary personal property to an inmate. The handbook lists prescription eyeglasses as an exception, subject to facility rules.

Medical or mental-health request

The inmate handbook directs inmates to submit a Medical or Mental Health Services request through the county-issued tablet.

  • Nurse calls are available daily.

  • Dental services are also available under the facility process.

LCDC’s inmate handbook describes a re-entry program intended to help inmates move from detention back into the community. Assistance can include support or referrals for basic living needs.

An inmate seeking re-entry help can submit an Inmate Request/Complaint form through the county-issued tablet to the Re-Entry Coordinator. Asking before the expected release date gives the program more time to identify available resources.
