Find the Right Galveston County Case Without Searching the Wrong Court

If you already have a cause number, use it first. If you only have a person’s or business’s name, open Galveston County’s current Tyler Odyssey Portal and use Smart Search. You can then narrow the results by case type, status, filing date, judicial officer or other available identifiers.

The important part is knowing which court owns the case. Felony and district-level civil records are routed differently from County Court at Law misdemeanors, probate matters, Justice of the Peace cases and city municipal tickets. This guide shows where each record belongs, how to search it, what the result means and how to obtain the actual filed document.

Important 2026 search change: the former Galveston County Tyler Public Access system reached end of support on December 31, 2025. Use the current Tyler Odyssey Portal instead. ReSearchTX is another official option for Family, Probate and Civil case information, but it is not the replacement search for criminal cases.
Current portal

Tyler Odyssey Portal is the county’s current case-search starting point.

Choose the court before you search the name

A common reason people cannot find a Galveston County case is that they are searching the right name in the wrong court system. Start with the kind of dispute or charge, then open the appropriate record source.

DISTRICT CLERK Felony or district-level lawsuit

Use for criminal matters filed in district court and district-level civil litigation such as personal injury, contract, consumer and delinquent tax cases.

District Clerk route
COUNTY CLERK Misdemeanor, County Court or probate

The County Clerk maintains records for the County Courts at Law and Probate Court, including misdemeanor and eligible civil matters.

County Clerk route
JUSTICE COURT Small claims, eviction or JP matter

Galveston County Justice of the Peace courts maintain their own precinct-level cases and search resources.

Find a JP case
MUNICIPAL COURT City ticket or municipal offense

Traffic, ordinance and other municipal matters generally remain with the city court that issued the case.

Find the city court
Fast decision rule: if the document says District Court, start with the District Clerk. If it says County Court at Law or Probate Court, start with the County Clerk. If it shows a Justice Precinct or city municipal court, use that lower court directly.

Advanced filters

Use only the search filters that actually help

Odyssey provides considerably more than a basic first-and-last-name box. These filters are useful when a common surname produces many results.

Current Odyssey Smart Search options
Search option
When it helps
Practical caution
Record number
Best when a citation, notice, pleading or prior search already provides the cause number.
Copy it exactly before adding other filters.
Last / first / middle / suffix
Useful for locating a person when the case number is unknown.
Middle names and suffixes are not always entered consistently.
Party Name
Normal individual-party searches.
Verify another identifier before assuming identity.
Nickname
When the record may contain an alternate given name.
Do not use it as the only identity confirmation.
Business Name
Companies, organizations and business parties in civil cases.
Use the portal’s Business Name search type instead of a personal-name format.
Sounds Like
Possible spelling variations.
Expect broader results and verify carefully.
Date of birth range
Separating people with the same or similar names.
A missing DOB does not automatically exclude a case.
Booking / SO / FBI number
Certain criminal-party searches when an identifier is already known.
Use only information legitimately available to you.
Case type
Separating criminal, civil, family and other case categories.
Do not guess the category when you are unsure.
Case status
Narrowing active, disposed or other case states.
A status label does not replace the actual disposition or judgment.
File date
People or businesses with many cases.
Use a wider range when the filing year is uncertain.
Judicial officer
When you already know which court or judge handled the matter.
Cases can move between courts.
Search strategy: cause number first; otherwise surname + first name; then add one useful filter at a time. Too many guessed filters can hide the case you are trying to find.
Criminal records

Separate felony cases from County Court misdemeanors

District-court criminal case

Use the District Clerk route for criminal matters filed in Galveston County district courts.

Look for:

  • Cause number
  • Defendant name
  • Charge or case type
  • Assigned district court
  • Filed date
  • Case status
  • Settings and hearings
  • Motions and orders
  • Disposition or judgment

County Court at Law misdemeanor

Galveston County’s three County Courts at Law hear criminal misdemeanor matters along with other assigned case types.

Start with:

  • Odyssey Smart Search
  • County Clerk court records
  • Cause number when available
  • Current court and hearing date
  • Orders and final disposition
A charge listing is not a conviction. Read the final disposition for each count. A case may be dismissed, reduced, amended, deferred, tried, pleaded or otherwise resolved differently from the initial allegation.

Civil lawsuits

Search the case before requesting a stack of documents

The Galveston County District Clerk Civil Section specifically identifies records such as contract cases, consumer lawsuits, personal injury matters and delinquent tax suits. Some civil cases are also handled in the County Courts at Law.

Search the plaintiff or defendant Use the business-name option when a company is a party.
Confirm the cause number Save it before requesting documents or calling the clerk.
Read the case style Confirm that the named parties match the dispute you are researching.
Check filing date and assigned court Similar party names can have several unrelated lawsuits.
Read the events Look for the petition, answer, motions, service, orders, judgment and post-judgment activity.
Open the judgment or dismissal Do not infer the final result from the case-status label alone.
If you were served with a lawsuit: use the portal to confirm the cause number, court and documents, but do not rely on this article to calculate your legal deadline. Court deadlines can depend on the case and method of service. Use official self-help resources or legal counsel promptly.
Family court records

Divorce and custody cases are not ordinary civil searches

The District Clerk Family Section maintains Galveston County records involving adoptions, child support, custody, divorce, family protection matters and name changes.

Divorce

Search by either party’s name or the cause number. Read the docket for petitions, orders, hearings and final decree information.

Custody and support

Use the case number when possible because the same parties can have several related family filings.

Restricted records

Adoption, sealed records, protected information and some family documents may have limited public visibility.

Probate court

Wills, estates and guardianships follow the Probate Court route

Probate matters are handled separately from an ordinary criminal or district-court civil search. Galveston County has a statutory Probate Court at the Justice Center.

What online access cannot tell you

A court search is not the same as a background check

One county only

A Galveston County search does not automatically reveal cases filed elsewhere in Texas or in another state.

Name matches can be wrong

Common names can produce unrelated cases. Compare DOB, cause number, address or another legitimate identifier when available.

Public access can be restricted

Sealed, juvenile, adoption and legally confidential records can be unavailable even when a related case exists.

Employment or tenant-screening caution: a public court search is not automatically a compliant consumer report. Employers, landlords and consumer-reporting agencies may have separate obligations under federal and state law.
Where to go

Galveston Justice Center and League City branch

Galveston County Justice Center

The District Clerk, County Clerk court operations, district courts, County Courts at Law and Probate Court are centered at the Justice Center at 600 59th Street. Check the exact room or suite before arriving.

League City County Branch

Both the County Clerk and District Clerk maintain services at 174 Calder Road in League City, although their room or service location and telephone numbers differ.

Before driving to either office: confirm which clerk holds the case, the current hours, the exact suite, whether the document can be obtained online and which payment method is accepted.
Avoid these mistakes

Seven Galveston County search errors that waste the most time

Using an old Public Access bookmark

The county moved users to Odyssey Portal after the old system’s December 31, 2025 end of support.

Searching every case as District Clerk

County Court at Law, Probate, JP and municipal cases can follow different clerk routes.

Using too many filters

A guessed DOB, status or filing year can remove the correct result.

Reading “closed” as the outcome

Open the final judgment, dismissal or criminal disposition instead.

Calling the judge for a copy

The clerk is normally the records custodian. Court staff handle court operations and settings.

Sending a copy form without a case

The District Clerk copy form is for identified documents already filed, not for generating a list of cases.

Assuming every document is online

A public docket entry can exist even when the underlying document must be requested or is legally restricted.

10 practical questions

Galveston County court-record questions answered

How do I search Galveston County court records online?

Use the current Galveston County Tyler Odyssey Portal and select Smart Search. Enter a case or record number when you have it, or search a party name in Last, First Middle Suffix format. Advanced filters can narrow results by case type, case status, filing date, judicial officer and other identifiers. The former Public Access system reached end of support on December 31, 2025 and should not be used as the current starting point.

Where do I search Galveston County criminal court records?

Use the Galveston County Tyler Odyssey Portal for criminal case information. Felony district-court records are maintained through the District Clerk, while misdemeanor cases heard in the County Courts at Law are handled through the County Clerk. Search by cause number when possible because it is more precise than a name-only search.

Where do I search Galveston County civil court records?

Start with Tyler Odyssey Portal. The Galveston County District Clerk Civil Section maintains district-court civil records including contract disputes, consumer lawsuits, personal injury cases and delinquent tax suits. County Courts at Law also hear certain civil matters. ReSearchTX is an additional search option for Civil, Family and Probate cases.

Can I search Galveston County court records by name?

Yes. Odyssey Smart Search accepts a record number or a name in Last, First Middle Suffix format. Advanced options also include party-name, nickname, business-name and Sounds Like searching, along with date-of-birth, case-type, case-status, filing-date and judicial-officer filters.

How do I find a Galveston County court date or hearing time?

Use the Search Hearings feature in the Galveston County Tyler Odyssey Portal. The portal specifically directs users to Search Hearings for hearing dates and times. Verify the cause number, court and newest setting before travelling because hearings can be reset or cancelled.

Why can I not find a Galveston County court case online?

The case may be in the wrong court system, filed under a different party name, too new to appear, sealed or confidential, handled by a Justice of the Peace or municipal court, or located in another county or federal court. Search the cause number when known, try name variations, remove unnecessary filters and identify which clerk or court actually maintains the case.

How much do Galveston County Clerk court-record copies cost?

The Galveston County Clerk FAQ currently lists plain court-case copies at 1 dollar per page. Certified copies are listed at 1 dollar per page plus a 5 dollar certification charge for each document. Confirm the current amount with the County Clerk before ordering because fees can change.

How do I request copies from the Galveston County District Clerk?

Use the District Clerk’s Online Request for Copies for documents that have already been filed in a case. The District Clerk states that the copy-request form cannot be used to request reports or ask the office to produce a list of cases. Locate the case first, identify the exact document and then submit the copy request.

Does the Galveston County court search include Justice of the Peace and municipal cases?

Not every lower-court matter should be expected in the same county and district court search. Galveston County Justice of the Peace courts provide precinct-level case-search resources for matters such as small claims, debt claims, evictions and certain citations. City municipal cases should be checked with the municipal court that issued the case.

Are all Galveston County court documents public online?

No. A public case entry does not mean every document is available online. Sealed records, confidential information, juvenile matters, adoption records and other legally restricted documents can have limited or no public access. Some public documents may also require a copy request from the County Clerk or District Clerk.
