Find the Booking First—Then Make Sure the Photo Belongs to the Right Person

Denton County does not require you to start with a third-party mugshot website. The county links directly to its Jail Records Search, where you can look for a booking and review the jail record associated with that person.

If the arrest happened only recently, there is one important local complication: the City of Denton Jail and Denton County Jail are separate facilities. Someone arrested by Denton Police may still be in the city’s temporary jail before appearing in county custody.

A booking photograph is not proof of guilt. A mugshot documents an arrest or custody-processing event. Charges may later be changed, rejected, dismissed or resolved differently in court. Always connect the booking to the correct court case before describing someone as convicted.

Start in the right system

Four different records answer four different questions

DENTON COUNTY JAIL Is there a county booking?

Use the Sheriff-linked jail records system for county booking and inmate information.

Start here when the person has already been booked into Denton County custody.
CITY OF DENTON JAIL Was the arrest extremely recent?

Denton Police maintains a separate real-time City Jail Custody Report.

A city inmate may not yet appear in the county jail system.
COURT RECORD What happened to the charge?

Search the Denton County court record for the prosecution and final disposition.

The court case—not the mugshot—answers the conviction question.
DCSO RECORDS Need an older photo or file?

Request the identified booking or arrest record from the Sheriff’s Records Division.

Use a records request when the public jail portal does not provide what you need.

Go straight to the Denton County task

If you are checking a fresh arrest, start with the first four sections before using family, court or record-clearing resources.

Mugshot identity check

Never identify someone from the photograph alone

Booking photos are especially easy to misuse when several people share a name. Before saving, sharing or relying on a mugshot, connect it to the actual booking record.

Full legal name is consistent
Date of birth matches when available
Booking number belongs to the same record
Booking date fits the event you are researching
Arresting agency makes sense
Charge information matches the known incident
Court case follows the same booking
Release or custody timeline is consistent
Do not use facial resemblance as your identity test. A booking number plus another reliable identifier is much safer than “the person looks like them.”

What a mugshot can and cannot tell you

Treat the photograph as one part of the booking record
Question
What the photo can support
What it cannot prove
Was a photograph created?
A displayed image can be associated with the public booking detail where it appears.
That every arrest record or historical booking will display a public image.
Is this the correct person?
The image can supplement matching booking identifiers.
Identity based on appearance alone.
Was the person convicted?
Nothing about conviction status.
Guilt, conviction or final case outcome.
Is the charge still active?
Nothing about the current prosecution.
Whether prosecutors filed, amended or dismissed charges.
Is the person still in jail?
The photo identifies a custody event.
Current custody after release or transfer.

What to do when you cannot find a recent Denton County mugshot

The person may still be processing A new arrest can occur before the public county record answers every custody question.
The person may still be in Denton City Jail Denton Police operates a separate temporary detention facility and publishes its own current-inmate report.
The person may already be released A photograph or current custody record may not be the best way to research a completed jail stay.
The name may be different in booking Try a middle name, suffix, hyphenated surname, maiden name or another known legal spelling.
The arrest occurred in another county Search the jail where the person was actually booked rather than the place where they live.
The public result may not display a photograph Absence of an image does not establish that no booking record exists.
The record may be restricted Sealed, expunged, juvenile and other legally restricted records may not be publicly accessible.
The person may have transferred Check the current custody system rather than relying on an older booking page.

How to find the City of Denton Jail entrance

The City Jail itself is at 601 E. Hickory Street, but the public front-lobby entrance is at 204 Railroad Avenue. The city instructs visitors to use E. McKinney Street to reach Railroad Avenue, which is one-way, and then turn left into the parking lot.

Older or unavailable booking material

Request the booking photo or arrest record from DCSO Records

When an old booking no longer answers your question online—or when you need the actual government record rather than a screenshot—send a targeted public-information request.

Identify the exact record Ask for the booking photograph, jail booking record, arrest record or another clearly described item.
Include the person’s identifying information Provide the full name and date of birth when known.
Add the arrest or booking date A date range helps Records locate an older event.
Add the booking number when available This is one of the most useful identifiers for jail material.
Submit through an approved Sheriff channel DCSO currently accepts GovQA, email, U.S. mail and hand-delivered written requests.
Do not send the request to the District Clerk The District Clerk maintains district-court records, not Sheriff booking photographs.

Mugshot versus case outcome

Check what happened after the booking

Denton County itself warns that online records are subject to data-entry limitations and that judgment and case information should be verified through the actual court records on file.

Choose the correct case-record section Use the District Court area for district criminal matters and the appropriate county criminal court route for misdemeanors.
Search using the defendant’s name or case number A case number is safer when several people share the same name.
Compare the filing date with the booking date They do not have to be identical, but the timeline should make sense.
Read the registry of actions Look for charging documents, settings, bond orders, pleas, dismissals, judgments and sentences.
Check every count individually Different charges from one arrest can have different outcomes.
A photograph can remain associated with an arrest even when the criminal case later changes. Do not use an old mugshot as a substitute for a current court record.

Need a certified felony court document?

The District Clerk currently states that certified copies are $1 per page plus a $5 certification fee. A completed Record Request Form and payment are required. Certified copies are produced in hard copy and mailed to the requester; plain or uncertified copies may be emailed.
Bond and release

Do not treat the bond next to a mugshot as the whole release answer

Confirm the correct booking Match the name and booking number before discussing payment.
Open Denton County Bond Records The same county records system includes Sheriff bond records.
Review every charge A person can have several charges or cases with different bond conditions.
Ask whether another hold exists Another warrant, agency or jurisdiction may affect release.
Use a licensed company when choosing a surety bond Denton County publishes its own current licensed bail bond company list.
Keep the agreement and receipt Preserve the booking number, amount, company, premium and collateral terms.
The bond-company list is provided for verification, not endorsement. Compare licence status and terms yourself. Jail staff should not be expected to recommend one company over another.

If the person is still in Denton City Jail

City rules are different

The City of Denton states that Class C matters may be released through payment of the applicable bond or fine. Class B and higher charges may be handled through a licensed Denton County bail bond company or cash bond, depending on the case.

Confirm the amount directly with the City Jail before paying.

Personal versus legal mail

Do not send ordinary inmate letters to the jail street address

Regular personal mail

Denton County routes non-legal personal mail through Smart Communications, where it is scanned for the inmate to view electronically.

Smart Communications / Denton County Jail

Do not substitute the personal-mail PO Box for privileged legal correspondence.

Friends and family may use Smart Communications’ MailGuard Tracker to monitor delivery status, receive rejection notifications and access copies of processed mail.
Upon release, Denton County states that former inmates can use SmartInmate with their inmate number and password to download their photos, messages and postal mail without charge.
Commissary and phone account

Use the booking information before putting money on an account

Commissary

Denton County currently directs friends and family to CorrectPay for commissary deposits.

  • Create an account at CorrectPay.
  • Use the correct inmate information.
  • Telephone deposits/support: 855-836-3364.
  • If the inmate already has more than $300 in the account, a credit-card deposit cannot currently be made.
  • In that situation, the county states that only a cash deposit at the facility can be made.

Phone Debit

Friends and family can place funds into an inmate Phone Debit account through SmartInmate.

  • Create an account first.
  • Select the correct inmate.
  • Add Phone Debit funds.
  • SmartInmate support: 727-349-1561.
Open SmartInmate
Verify the booking number before depositing. A same-name mistake is much harder to fix after money has been credited to the wrong account.
Court-appointed counsel

If the person cannot afford a criminal-defense lawyer

Denton County has a formal indigent-defense process for eligible misdemeanor and felony defendants.

Request counsel during magistrate proceedings A person can ask for court-appointed counsel when appearing before the magistrate after arrest.
If still in jail, use the jail kiosk Denton County states that incarcerated defendants may submit a Request for Court Appointed Attorney from a jail kiosk.
If released, apply through Indigent Defense when necessary Applicants may be asked for payroll information, tax returns, public-assistance documentation and other financial records.
The county decides eligibility Income is not the only factor; assets and extraordinary financial circumstances may also be considered.

Old mugshots and record clearing

A dismissed charge and an expunction are not the same thing

Case dismissed

A dismissal is a court outcome. It does not automatically mean every arrest record has been legally expunged.

Obtain the actual dismissal or disposition before trying to correct another database.

Expunction

Texas now places general expunction law in Chapter 55A of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Eligibility is fact-specific. An expunction can require covered government criminal records to be removed or destroyed as provided by law.

Order of nondisclosure

Nondisclosure is different from expunction. It can restrict public disclosure of eligible criminal-history information without erasing every government record.

Open Texas Judicial Branch forms

Incorrect record

A factual error should first be corrected with the agency or clerk that maintains the wrong information.

Correction is different from trying to legally clear an accurate arrest record.

Save the booking number Do not start with only a screenshot of the mugshot.
Locate the Denton County case Determine whether the case was filed as a misdemeanor or felony.
Obtain the final disposition Request a certified copy when legal proof is needed.
Identify what is still publicly visible Compare the Sheriff record, court record and any private website separately.
Use the correct legal remedy Do not assume dismissal alone means automatic expunction.
Do not promise that a mugshot will disappear from every website after a court order. Government compliance and private-site data are separate issues. Use the actual order and follow the correction or removal procedure for each remaining source.

Five checks that prevent the most serious mistakes

1. Verify identity

Match more than a name or face.

2. Verify booking date

Do not confuse an old booking with a recent arrest.

3. Verify the charge

Booking allegations can change after prosecutor review.

4. Verify the disposition

Search the actual criminal case before describing the outcome.

5. Check record status

Restricted, sealed or expunged material should not be treated like an ordinary public booking.

Use the official source

A third-party mugshot page may not reflect a later dismissal, release or court order.

10 Denton County questions

Denton County mugshots and booking-photo FAQs

How do I search Denton County mugshots and recent bookings?

Use Denton County’s official Jail Records Search through the Denton County Records Inquiry system. Search the available jail records for the person and open the matching booking. Compare the name, booking number, booking date, charges, bond information and other identifiers before relying on a booking photo. If the arrest happened very recently inside the City of Denton, also check the separate City Jail Custody Report because a person may not yet have transferred to the county jail.

Does Denton County have an official recent mugshots page?

Denton County directs the public to its official Jail Records Search rather than a separate county-branded mugshot gallery. Use the jail-record detail associated with the booking you are researching. A booking photograph, when publicly displayed, should be matched with the booking number and other identifying information rather than treated as proof of guilt.

Why is a Denton County booking photo not showing?

A missing public photograph does not by itself mean there was no booking. The person may still be processing, may be in the City of Denton Jail rather than the county jail, may already have been released or transferred, or the public record may not display an image. Call Denton County Jail Records at 940-349-1630 or 972-434-5507 when the official search does not answer the question.

Is the City of Denton Jail the same as Denton County Jail?

No. The City of Denton operates a separate temporary jail at the Denton Police Department. Its official City Jail Custody Report provides a real-time view of people currently booked there. The city states that inmates may be held for up to 72 hours before release or transfer. Denton County Jail is a separate Sheriff-operated detention facility at 127 North Woodrow Lane.

Does a Denton County mugshot mean the person was convicted?

No. A booking photograph documents a custody-processing event. It does not establish guilt or prove that the booking charge became a filed or final criminal charge. Check the Denton County court record for the actual prosecution, hearings and disposition.

How do I request an older Denton County booking photo or arrest record?

Submit a public-information request to the Denton County Sheriff’s Office Records Division. Requests may be submitted through the Sheriff’s GovQA portal, by email to so.orr@dentoncounty.gov, by mail to DCSO Records Division at 127 North Woodrow Lane, Denton, Texas 76205, or by hand delivery. Include the person’s name, date of birth, approximate arrest date and booking number when known, and identify the booking photograph or record you want.

How do I find the charges and bond for a Denton County inmate?

Use the Denton County Records Inquiry system and review the jail and bond records connected to the booking. Do not rely on one bond amount without checking every charge, warrant and possible hold. Denton County also publishes an official list of licensed bail bond companies through the county Bail Bond Board system.

How do I visit someone in the Denton County Jail?

Denton County Jail visitation is by video through HomeWav. On-site public visits are currently offered Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and must be scheduled at least 24 hours ahead. Remote-home visits are available daily from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and are initiated by the inmate. The public visitation entrance is at 127 Woodrow Lane on the southeast side of the jail complex.

How do I send mail or money to a Denton County inmate?

Regular personal mail is sent through Smart Communications at PO Box 9144, Seminole, Florida 33775-9144 and must include the inmate’s name and booking or ID number. Legal mail goes directly to Denton County Jail at 127 North Woodrow Lane, Denton, Texas 76205. Commissary deposits are available through CorrectPay, and phone debit funds can be added through SmartInmate.

Can a Denton County mugshot or arrest record be removed?

Some Texas arrest records may qualify for expunction under Chapter 55A of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, while some eligible criminal histories may qualify for an order of nondisclosure. Eligibility depends on the exact arrest, charge, disposition and other circumstances. Obtain the final Denton County court record before deciding whether either remedy may apply.
