The Travis County Clerk is the clerk for the County Criminal Courts at Law. These courts hear Class A and B misdemeanor cases such as many DWI, theft and assault prosecutions.

Use the County Clerk for civil matters filed in Travis County Courts at Law.

The County Clerk explains that its two primary civil County Courts at Law hear disputes generally involving amounts from $500 to $250,000 and also hear certain appeals.

Online probate case data is listed from July 1992 to the present.

Pre-July 1992 searches that require microfilm currently carry a $5 per-name, per-decade search charge.

Confidential District Clerk case

The District Clerk states that a records request for a confidential case must be made in person by the assigned attorney or an individual party involved in the case.

Bring proper identification such as a driver’s license or attorney ID.

Adoption records

Adoption access has additional restrictions. The District Clerk’s FAQ states that obtaining adoption documents requires a signed order.

Do not expect adoption records to appear as normal public documents in Odyssey.

A missing public document can be a privacy or access-control issue rather than a technical error. Do not attempt to bypass sealed, confidential or restricted access.

JP courts handle small claims, evictions, debt matters, many Class C criminal complaints and related justice-court cases.

Are Travis County Justice of the Peace and Austin Municipal Court cases in the main county court search?

No. Travis County Justice of the Peace cases use a separate JP Odyssey Public Access portal. Austin Municipal Court cases, including many City of Austin traffic and Class C matters, use the Austin Municipal Court Public Portal. Searching only the District Clerk or County Clerk can therefore miss these lower-level cases.

Can I view confidential Travis County court cases online?

Not all court files are publicly available online. The District Clerk states that requests involving confidential cases must be made in person by the assigned attorney or an individual party to the case, with proper identification. Adoption records have additional access requirements. Sealed and otherwise restricted records are not made public simply because a name or cause number is known.
