Find a Recent Travis County Booking Without Mistaking Custody for a Conviction

If somebody was arrested in Austin or elsewhere in Travis County and you are trying to find them quickly, begin with the Travis County Sheriff’s inmate search. That search is most useful for people who are currently in TCSO custody. Save the full booked name, date of birth, Jail ID or booking number, charges, bond information and housing location before leaving the result.

If the person has already been released, do not assume “no inmate found” means no arrest happened. Move to the Travis County criminal docket, the appropriate Clerk’s case system, or the arresting agency’s records. This guide separates those paths so you can find a recent arrest, request a booking sheet or photo, confirm bond, locate the court case and help someone who is still in jail.

Recent arrest does not mean conviction. A booking entry shows an arrest and custody event. Charges can later be rejected, reduced, amended, dismissed, resolved through deferred adjudication, or result in another court disposition. Check the court case before describing an arrest as a conviction.

The distinction that prevents most confusion

“Recent arrest,” “current inmate” and “booking report” are not the same record

Current inmate search

Use this when you believe the person is still physically in Travis County custody.

It is the fastest route to current charges, bond information and identifying information needed for jail services.

Recent arrest after release

A person can be arrested, booked and released before you run the inmate search.

Use criminal court records and the arresting agency when current custody no longer exists.

Booking sheet or photo

These are records created during booking, not necessarily a feature of the live inmate-search page.

TCSO directs public booking-photo requests through its Open Records process.

Final legal outcome

Use the Travis County District Clerk for felony case records and the County Clerk for most Class A and B misdemeanor cases.

Shortest useful sequence: check current custody → save the booking number → identify every charge and bond → identify felony or misdemeanor court → read the disposition → request only the missing report or certified record.
Start with what happened

Choose the route that matches your situation

ARRESTED VERY RECENTLY Check whether booking has posted

Search TCSO current custody. If nothing appears, the person may still be in intake.

Booking reports explained

Which Travis County booking record do you actually need?

“Booking report” is often used loosely. Travis County publishes several different records that answer different questions. Requesting the wrong one can add unnecessary delays.

Request a TCSO booking sheet, booking photo or detailed booking record

Open the TCSO Open Records page The Texas Public Information Act process is the appropriate route for a written request for releasable TCSO information. Open TCSO Open Records Request
Identify exactly what you want Say “booking sheet,” “booking photo,” “probable-cause affidavit,” or another specific record rather than asking for “everything.”
Add enough identifiers Include the full name, date of birth, booking number, arrest date and related case number when known.
Identify the arresting agency If Austin Police made the arrest, TCSO may have the jail record while APD holds the underlying police report.
State that electronic copies are acceptable This can avoid unnecessary paper handling when an electronic record is available.

What happens after the arrest

Follow the person from arrest to Central Booking and court

TCSO states that people arrested in Travis County are brought to the Central Booking Facility inside Travis County Jail at 500 W. 10th Street, Austin.
Law enforcement takes the person into custody The arresting agency may be TCSO, Austin Police, a Travis County constable, another local department, DPS or another agency.
The person reaches Central Booking Booking records are created and identity, charge and custody information is processed.
Medical and mental-health screening occurs TCSO states that individuals are screened for mental-health needs during Central Booking.
A judge or magistrate addresses release conditions Bond may already exist on a warrant or may be set during the court process.
Bond type determines possible release routes Cash, surety and personal bond options differ.
The person may be assigned to another housing location Longer-term county housing is commonly at the Travis County Correctional Complex in Del Valle.
A felony or misdemeanor case moves into the correct court system That court record is where you verify settings and final disposition.
Upon release, TCSO says the person receives paperwork containing a court date. The attorney can also provide court-setting information. Family members should verify settings through the Travis County criminal docket because dates can change.

Jail record vs police report

Find the agency that actually created the arrest report

Travis County Jail can hold people arrested by several law-enforcement agencies. The agency that transported the person to Central Booking is often the office that owns the underlying offense or arrest report.

TCSO arrest

Use Travis County Sheriff Central Records when TCSO created the incident or arrest report.

Austin Police arrest

A large share of arrests within the City of Austin originate with APD. Use APD records rather than asking the Sheriff to reproduce an APD narrative.

TCSO public incident report vs full Open Records request

Public incident report

TCSO says the normal public-information portion includes items such as:

  • type of offense;
  • date and time;
  • responding officer;
  • reported stolen or damaged property.

The normal public version does not contain the officer’s narrative.

Detailed Open Records request

Use a written Open Records request when you need additional releasable material such as the detailed report or officer narrative.

Some information may still be withheld under Texas law.

The current TCSO incident-report page lists a price of $0.10 per page for the basic public report.

When Austin Police made the arrest

Open the APD Incident Report Database APD says the public database updates daily. Open APD Incident Reports
Use the report number if you know it APD supports a specific case-number search as well as geographic searches.
Remember the database is not a jail roster It shows police-report data, not necessarily whether the person is still incarcerated.
Use the City Public Information process for additional records Body-camera files and other materials may require a separate public-information request.
APD states that its online incident-report database covers approximately the most recent 18 months and updates daily.
APD Arrests dataset: this official City of Austin dataset can help with broader historical APD arrest research, but its update cadence is not the same as a live jail roster. Do not use it to decide whether somebody is in custody right now.
After booking

Find the Travis County court case and actual disposition

Useful local shortcut: Travis County District Attorney guidance says felony cause numbers begin with D-1-DC. Misdemeanor cause numbers handled by the County Attorney generally begin with C.

Felony case

The Travis County District Clerk Criminal Division maintains adult felony criminal records.

  • Use the Odyssey Portal for public case information.
  • Use the criminal docket for future settings.
  • For official felony copies, use the District Clerk records-request process.

Class A or B misdemeanor

Travis County Clerk maintains records from the County Criminal Courts at Law.

  • Search County Clerk misdemeanor case data.
  • Review the cause and attorney information.
  • Order certified records when proof is needed.

Use the criminal docket when you mainly need the next court date

Travis County Criminal Courts allows docket searches by the arrested person’s name, attorney name, judge or court number, or case number.
Open Criminal Docket Search Search Travis County criminal settings
Search the arrested person’s name Use the exact booked name first.
Use the cause number when available This is safer than relying on a common name.
Check the appearance instruction The docket can show the date, time, court, floor, matter and whether an appearance at the courthouse is required.
Recheck the day before court Travis County specifically tells users to verify the setting before coming to the courthouse.
If an attorney or the judge has given different appearance instructions, follow those instructions rather than relying only on the public docket.

How far back do online records go?

District Clerk felony portal

The District Clerk’s current general case-record page says criminal cases from 2008 to present are included in its free online court-record portal.

Older records may require a paid records request or archival search.

County Clerk misdemeanor data

The County Clerk says misdemeanor case data is online from January 1981 to present, with some redacted documents available online.

Newly filed document images may take about 72 hours to appear.

Bond and release

Read every charge before trying to post Travis County bail

“ANY” type of bond

TCSO says the defendant may potentially post a cash, surety or personal bond.

“Cash or surety”

Personal bond is not an option on that bond line.

“No bond information available”

A bond has not yet been set for that charge and may be set later.

One bond does not necessarily release the person. Check every active charge, case, hold and warrant before paying anything.

Cash bond

Confirm where the person is housed TCSO says cash bonds can be posted at the jail facility where the defendant is housed.
Call before travelling Call 512-854-4180 to confirm the correct bonding location.
Bring the full exact amount TCSO says exact cash is required because change is not provided and overage is not accepted.
Cashier’s check or money order is another published option Make qualifying Travis County instruments payable as directed by TCSO.
Keep the receipt Cash-bond refunds are processed through the appropriate Clerk after the required court process.

Personal bond

TCSO says an individual defendant cannot simply post a personal bond for themselves. Travis County Pretrial Services or an attorney must submit the request, and a judge decides whether to approve it.

How Travis County inmate property can be released

TCSO inventories personal belongings during booking. Keys, ID, wallet, jewelry and similar valuables are placed in a sealed valuable bag, while clothing is stored separately for release or transfer.

An inmate may authorize release of the stored valuable bag and/or a specified amount of money. TCSO describes property release as an all-or-nothing transaction for the sealed valuable bag; individual items are not removed one at a time.
Have the inmate sign a property-release form first Confirm this before driving to the jail.
Bring valid photo ID The designated recipient must identify themselves.
Use the correct facility Property release is available through both Central Booking and TCCC under their current schedules.

Start with the Travis County Sheriff’s official inmate search when you believe the person is still in custody. The official jail search is designed for people currently held by TCSO rather than as a chronological daily-booking gallery. If the person was released before you searched, check Travis County criminal court records and the arresting agency, or request the booking record from TCSO.

Where is someone taken after an arrest in Travis County?

After booking and classification, the person may remain there temporarily or be housed at the Travis County Correctional Complex in Del Valle.

How do I get a Travis County booking report or booking sheet?

Use the TCSO Open Records Request process when you need a booking sheet or another releasable booking record. Requests for another person’s incarceration record require the authorization and identification specified by TCSO.

Can I get a Travis County booking photo or mugshot?

TCSO’s Public Information Office says members of the public who are not media representatives must request booking photos through an Open Records Request. Do not rely on third-party mugshot sites as the official source for the booking record.

Why can’t I find a recently arrested person in the Travis County inmate search?

The person may still be going through intake, may have already been released, may be listed under another spelling, may have received a citation rather than a jail booking, or may be held by another county, state or federal agency. Call Travis County jail information when the status remains unclear and check the Travis County criminal docket for a filed case.

How do I find bond information for someone in Travis County Jail?

Bond information appears under individual charges in the TCSO inmate record. Mail must be sent directly to the facility where the inmate is housed and must include the inmate’s full name, date of birth and Jail ID or booking number plus the sender’s return address.
