Choose the Right Tarrant County Clerk Before You Search
Tarrant County does not keep every criminal record in one public database. Felony cases go through the District Clerk, while Class A and B misdemeanor cases go through the County Clerk. Jail bookings, municipal cases, Justice of the Peace cases and statewide history use different systems.
Start by identifying the record you actually need: a current court date, filed charge, final disposition, certified judgment, recent jail booking or broader Texas history. This page shows the shortest official route and explains what each result can—and cannot—prove.
Use the Tarrant County District Clerk Criminal Division.
Use the County Clerk for Class A and B cases.
Each clerk currently lists a $5 county-only search.
Use the Sheriff’s inmate search or 14-day reports.
Official procedures checked August 5, 2026.
Which Tarrant County system should you use?
Use for felony causes, district criminal court filings, judgments, felony background searches and unfiled magistration documents.
Felony records: 817-884-1342 or 817-884-1343.Use for county criminal court cases, misdemeanor dispositions, court dates, attorneys, bondsmen, fines and copies.
Misdemeanor case information: 817-884-1066.Use for current inmates, booking information, charges, bonds, jail history, recent booked-in reports and letters of incarceration.
Detention Bureau information: 817-884-3000.Use Odyssey Public Access for many Justice of the Peace records. City citations and municipal warrants stay with the issuing municipal court.
Do not send a Fort Worth municipal ticket to the County Clerk felony desk.Use DPS when the search must extend beyond Tarrant County or compare criminal-history data reported by Texas agencies.
A name-based possible match is not fingerprint confirmation.Use TDCJ for a person serving a state sentence, a state facility location, conviction offense or projected release information.

Tarrant County criminal-record questions answered
How do I search Tarrant County criminal records?
First identify the case level. Contact the Tarrant County District Clerk for felony cases and the Tarrant County County Clerk for Class A and B misdemeanor cases. Use the official criminal court docket to check current settings, the Sheriff’s inmate database for jail bookings, and Texas DPS when a statewide criminal-history search is needed.
Are Tarrant County felony and misdemeanor records kept by the same clerk?
No. The District Clerk maintains felony cases filed in the district criminal courts. The County Clerk Criminal Division maintains Class A and B misdemeanor cases filed in the county criminal courts. Justice of the Peace and municipal Class C cases may be stored in separate court systems.
Can I search Tarrant County felony case documents online for free?
Tarrant County provides free onsite public document lookup terminals at the Tim Curry Criminal Justice Center. Remote access to imaged District Clerk case documents is available through a paid subscription service. The official criminal court docket can be used without that subscription to check current court settings.
How much is a Tarrant County criminal background search?
The District Clerk currently lists a five-dollar Tarrant County felony background search, and the County Clerk lists a five-dollar Class A and B misdemeanor background search. Each search covers only the records maintained by that particular clerk and does not create a complete statewide history.
How do I find a criminal case that has not been filed yet?
The Tarrant County District Clerk can provide certain unfiled magistration documents before a felony case is formally filed. Available records may include a probable-cause affidavit, magistrate warning, arrest warrant, conditions of bail, personal bond or emergency-protection order. Requests can be sent to dcmagrequest@tarrantcountytx.gov.
How do I obtain a certified Tarrant County felony disposition?
Locate the felony cause number, then request the judgment, dismissal, order or other disposition from the District Clerk Criminal Division. Certified paper copies currently cost one dollar per page plus a five-dollar certification and seal fee. Certified electronic copies use the published electronic-copy rate plus the five-dollar certification fee.
Why can I find a Tarrant County court case but no jail booking?
The person may have received a citation and release notice, may have bonded before the search, may have been booked by another county, or may have a case that was filed without a current Tarrant County jail stay. Search the court record separately from the Sheriff’s inmate database.
How do I search for someone currently in the Tarrant County Jail?
Use the official Tarrant County Sheriff’s inmate search and verify the person’s full name, date of birth, booking number, charges and bond information. The Sheriff also publishes daily booked-in reports covering the most recent fourteen days. Call 817-884-3000 when the current location or bond status is unclear.
Can the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office give me a complete criminal history?
The Sheriff’s Records Division can assist with local jail and incarceration records, but it does not replace a statewide criminal-history search. Texas public-information rules may also prevent a government office from compiling every arrest or charge about a person in response to a broad records request. Use Texas DPS for a statewide public criminal-history search.
Can a Tarrant County criminal record be expunged or sealed?
Some cases may qualify for expunction or an order of nondisclosure under Texas law. Eligibility depends on the charge, disposition, waiting period, prior history and other case facts. Obtain certified records first. Tarrant County lists separate District Clerk contacts for expunctions and felony nondisclosures, while misdemeanor nondisclosure applications are handled through the County Clerk criminal process.
